SoilSteam customer shortlisted for prestigious UK Brownfield Award
We are extremely proud to see our UK customer, Gavin Griffiths Group, shortlisted for the Brownfield Awards 2026, one of the leading industry awards recognising innovation and excellence in the UK brownfield sector.
Together with SoilSteam, Advanced Invasives and Morgan Sindall Infrastructure, Gavin Griffiths Group has been shortlisted in the category “Best Research or Application in the Advancement of Science, Technology or Digital Innovation in the Brownfield Sector.”
The nominated project – “De-risking and Deploying a UK-First Soil Steaming Innovation for Invasive-Impacted Brownfield Soils” – is based on the introduction, scientific validation and commercial deployment of SoilSteam’s SoilSaver technology in the UK.
Recognition in a highly competitive market
For SoilSteam, this nomination means a great deal.
The UK has one of Europe’s most developed and competitive markets for brownfield remediation and soil reuse, with a strong focus on reducing landfill, lowering carbon emissions and keeping excavated soil as a valuable resource.
Introducing an entirely new remediation method into such a mature market requires both commitment and courage.
Gavin Griffiths Group made that commitment when they decided to introduce SoilSaver to the UK. They invested in the technology, operator training and independent scientific validation before bringing it into commercial operation.
From invasive soil to reusable resource
One of the challenges facing UK construction projects is soil impacted by invasive plants such as Japanese knotweed. Traditional approaches can involve years of herbicide treatment or excavation and disposal of the affected soil.
SoilSaver provides another option.
The mobile system treats excavated soil using controlled steam heat, destroying viable plant material without chemical additives and enabling the soil to be recovered and reused rather than disposed of.
Before commercial deployment, Gavin Griffiths Group commissioned an independent study with Advanced Invasives. The results showed no emergent growth from the steam-treated Japanese knotweed rhizomes, while untreated control samples produced extensive new growth.
The technology was subsequently deployed with Morgan Sindall Infrastructure at Dŵr Cymru Welsh Water’s Trebanos site in South Wales – the first full-scale UK application of mobile soil steaming for invasive-species remediation within a regulated construction environment.
Approximately 1,780 m³ of invasive-impacted soil was treated on site and made available for reuse within the project.

Proud of our customer
Technology alone does not change an industry. Customers willing to adopt it do.
Gavin Griffiths Group has been willing to challenge established methods, invest in a new technology and demonstrate that soil affected by invasive plants does not necessarily have to become waste.
Seeing this work recognised by the UK brownfield industry through such a prestigious nomination makes us extremely proud.
It is also an important milestone for SoilSteam. In one of Europe’s most demanding markets for soil remediation and reuse, SoilSaver is demonstrating a simple but important principle:
Save the soil. Treat the problem. Reuse the resource.
Congratulations to Gavin Griffiths Group, Advanced Invasives and Morgan Sindall Infrastructure on the nomination. We are proud to be part of this strong team.
